I’ve been visiting and following shelters on social media, and I can’t ignore it: shelter populations are at an all-time high. Economic uncertainty, rising costs, and the aftermath of the pandemic have pushed more dogs and cats into shelters than I’ve seen in years. Many of these innocent animals face euthanasia—not because the staff wants it, but simply because there’s no room left.

• Shelter teams work tirelessly—walking dogs, providing daily care, and offering love—even while they must make heart-breaking decisions.

• No organization wants to euthanize. It happens only when capacity is exceeded.
